Is Chobits worth reading?

I just finished reading the first half (Omnibus 1), and while I found it fairly enjoyable it seemed lacking in plot/drama (too much ecchi, repetition, and lackluster characters). Does the second half pick up the pace, or is it more of the same? Also, does Chobits have a *completely* happy ending? (please don't say what the ending is...I just want to know if it's "and everyone lived happily ever after, the end." I can't stand happy endings). :P I don't want to fork over another 25 dollars for the second half if it's not worth it, so that's why I'm asking. :)
