The Drug culture of the 1960's with musical influence?

I am planning on writing a paper about the drug culture of the 60's with influences like Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, etc. The only question I have is which influenced which: did the drugs influence the bands, did the music influence the society, which is which?
